Did you know that you can make your own sea moss gel in a few simple steps?
Below I explain in 6 easy steps how to make your own nutritional supplement.
STEP 1: For about 450 ml of sea moss gel, take about 15 grams of dried sea moss. Put the sea moss in water for about 10 minutes to soften the algae a bit so that the next step, cleaning, becomes a lot easier.
STEP 2: Clean the sea moss under running water next.
STEP 3: Put the cleaned sea moss in a bowl and add filtered water, spring or mineral water. Preferably do not use unfiltered tap water. To this, add freshly squeezed lime juice. This step is not necessary, but recommended, as the lime will clean the sea moss extra well during soaking.
STEP 4: Soak the sea moss for 4-8 hours (maximum 24 hours) at room temperature or in the refrigerator. After a few hours of soaking, the sea moss will grow larger and thicker. Preferably do not soak the sea moss longer than 24 hours. Soaking for too long can cause certain nutrients to be lost.
STEP 5: Put the soaked sea moss in a blender and add water until almost covered. If you are unsure of the amount of water, use little water at first and gradually add water while blending. Blend for about 4 minutes until the proper consistency is reached. The sea moss gel should not be too solid immediately after blending. It should still be liquid, but also not too runny/watery.
OPTIONAL: While blending, add fresh lime juice. This will give the sea moss gel a fresh flavour and will also preserve the gel extra well. Fruit (fresh or frozen) can also be added, but remember that if you add fruit, the gel will keep for 1 week at most instead of 3 weeks.
STEP 6: Pour the gel into an airtight jar and place in the refrigerator. After a few hours, the gel will thicken and take on a nice, gel-like texture. The sea moss gel will keep for up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator.
If you follow all these steps, you will get a delicious, creamy and homemade sea moss gel.
Making your own sea moss gel has numerous advantages, but most importantly, it is a lot cheaper than ready-made sea moss gel.
With 75 g of sea moss you make about 5 jars of 450 ml gel.
